Head of Science – Middle School
August 2026 start
 
We are seeking an inspiring and innovative Head of Science to lead the Science Department at a new, bilingual middle school in Shanghai opening in August 2026. This is a unique opportunity to play a founding role in shaping an inquiry-driven, concept-based Science curriculum that blends the strengths of Eastern and Western educational traditions.
 
The successful candidate will be a passionate educator and experienced department leader who can build a collaborative team, foster curiosity in young scientists, and promote excellence in teaching and learning across the Sciences.
 
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the middle school Science curriculum.
- Build, mentor, and inspire a team of Science teachers, supporting professional growth and high-quality teaching practice.
- Create engaging, inquiry-based learning experiences that develop students’ scientific thinking and understanding of the world around them.
- Collaborate with bilingual teaching teams to ensure the integration of both English and Chinese language learning in Science instruction.
- Oversee departmental resources, safety procedures, and laboratory management.
- Use assessment and data effectively to monitor student progress and refine instructional strategies.
- Contribute to the wider academic leadership of the school and participate in cross-curricular initiatives.
 
Qualifications and Experience
*Bachelor’s degree or higher in Science or Science Education (Master’s preferred).
*Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, Teaching License, or equivalent).
*Substantial experience teaching Science at middle or secondary school level; prior experience with international curricula such as Cambridge IGCSE, IB MYP, or IBDP is highly desirable.
*Proven experience in a leadership or coordination role within a Science department.
*Strong understanding of inquiry-based and student-centred pedagogy.
*Excellent communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.
*Commitment to bilingual, holistic education and cross-cultural collaboration.

Minimum Application Requirements

Qualification:
Minimum Qualification Requirement: M.Ed, B.Ed or a relevant Bachelor's Degree with a Teaching Qualification
Experience:

Must be western trained (USA, Canada, UK, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand & South Africa)
Must be a native speaker of English
Prefer candidates with international experience
Teachers with a degree but no teaching qualification are NOT accepted
Experienced teachers with no qualification are NOT accepted
Non-western trained teachers who have worked in an international educational institute before are NOT accepted
Additional:
**International teaching experience is beneficial
**Bilingual teacher preferred but not essential
**Able to support the school residential programme
**Able to supervise and/or lead co-curricular activity during activity time
**Able to lead pastoral programme

Remuneration Package

Salary Range:
A salary   CNY (Chinese Yuan Renminbi) per month based on experience and qualification, 10-25 % Tax is applied
