Head of Individuals & Societies

We are seeking an outstanding and forward-thinking Head of Individuals & Societies (Humanities) to join the team of a new bilingual middle school in Shanghai, opening in August 2026. This is a rare opportunity to help shape an innovative, inquiry-based curriculum that encourages students to explore human society, culture, history, and the world around them through multiple perspectives.
The successful candidate will be a passionate educator with strong leadership experience and a global outlook. You will inspire both teachers and students to think critically, make connections across disciplines, and understand their role as active, responsible citizens in an ever-changing world.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous refinement of the Individuals & Societies curriculum.
- Foster an inquiry-driven, concept-based approach to teaching that promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and intercultural understanding.
- Build, mentor, and support a dynamic team of Humanities teachers, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning.
- Integrate both Chinese and international perspectives within the curriculum, reflecting the school’s bilingual and bicultural philosophy.
- Oversee the use of data, assessment, and feedback to drive student progress and departmental improvement.
- Manage departmental resources and budgets effectively.
- Contribute to whole-school academic leadership and cross-curricular initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
*Bachelor’s degree or above in History, Geography, Social Studies, or a related Humanities discipline (Master’s preferred).
*Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, Teaching License, or equivalent).
*Proven experience teaching Humanities or Individuals & Societies at middle or secondary level; experience with Cambridge IGCSE, IB MYP, or IBDP frameworks is highly desirable.
*Demonstrated success in a leadership or coordination role.
*Strong understanding of inquiry-based learning and interdisciplinary education.
*Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.
*Commitment to bilingual and holistic education, and to fostering cross-cultural understanding.
