Head of Learning Support

A forward-thinking British International School in Beijing where every child is supported to achieve their full potential.
Our client is committed to providing an inclusive, supportive, and challenging learning environment for all of their students. The school believes that every child is unique and has the ability to succeed – and they are proud of their diverse community where we embrace the individual strengths and needs of each learner.
The school's Learning Support Department plays a key role in ensuring that all students, including those with additional learning needs, are given the tools and resources to thrive academically and socially. The school is now looking for an experienced, compassionate, and innovative Head of Learning Support to lead this vital area and continue to enhance our inclusive ethos.
The Role:
As Head of Learning Support, you will be responsible for leading a dynamic team of Learning Support Teachers and Teaching Assistants, ensuring that the students with additional learning needs receive tailored support that enables them to reach their full potential. You will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), class teachers, and parents to create individualised education plans (IEPs) and interventions that help each child flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.
This is a senior leadership role that requires both strategic vision and a hands-on, compassionate approach. You will be a key player in developing our school’s approach to inclusion, ensuring that learning support is integrated into everyday classroom life, and that we celebrate the diversity of our school community.
What You’ll Be Doing:
* Leading the Learning Support Team: Manage, support, and mentor a talented team of Learning Support Teachers and Teaching Assistants, ensuring they are equipped to deliver outstanding support across the school.
* Strategic Vision & Development: Develop and implement a strategic vision for learning support across the school, ensuring that our inclusive practices align with the school’s educational philosophy and mission.
* Tailored Student Support: Work with teachers and parents to design and implement individualised education plans (IEPs) for students, offering both in-class and pull-out interventions.
* Collaboration: Collaborate with the whole-school teaching team to ensure that differentiation and inclusion are embedded into daily practice, creating an environment where all learners are supported.
* Monitoring & Evaluation: Track and monitor student progress, using data to assess the effectiveness of support strategies, make adjustments, and ensure continuous improvement.
* Parental Partnership: Maintain open lines of communication with parents, ensuring they are fully involved in their child’s learning journey and receive regular feedback on progress.
* Professional Development: Provide ongoing professional development for staff on inclusive teaching practices, differentiation, and supporting students with a range of learning needs.
* Awareness & Advocacy: Advocate for students with additional learning needs, raising awareness of learning differences and promoting a culture of inclusivity throughout the school.
Who We’re Looking For:
- Experienced Leader: You have a proven track record of leadership in a learning support or SEN (Special Educational Needs) role, with significant experience in managing teams and developing effective strategies to support diverse learners.
- Inclusive & Innovative: You are passionate about inclusive education, and you’re always looking for creative and evidence-based ways to support and engage students with a range of learning needs.
- Collaborative & Compassionate: You work well in a team and are able to build strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues, ensuring that everyone is working together for the success of each student.
- Data-Driven: You have the ability to use data effectively to monitor student progress, identify areas for intervention, and measure the success of learning support strategies.
- Professional & Approachable: You are both a strong leader and a supportive, approachable presence within the school, able to motivate your team while also providing the hands-on guidance that students and staff need.
- Fluent in English: You must be a fluent English speaker, both written and spoken; knowledge of Mandarin is not required but would be an asset.
What You’ll Need:
* A recognised teaching qualification (QTS or equivalent), along with additional certifications in Special Educational Needs or Learning Support (e.g., SENCO or equivalent).
* Extensive experience working with students with a range of learning needs in a school setting, including those with dyslexia, autism, ADHD, and other neurodiverse conditions.
* Strong leadership experience in managing and supporting a team of learning support staff.
* Experience in creating and managing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), running interventions, and collaborating with other educators.
* A commitment to ongoing professional development and staying up to date with the latest research and best practices in the field of learning support.
* Knowledge of the British Curriculum and its approach to inclusion.
