Teaching in Asia is a very popular decision for teachers.  As the world comes closer together one of the key barriers remaining is language.  The English language has become a requirement for most people rather than a benefit.  With a growing economy, schools in this area serve expatriates as well as those wanting their children to learn the importance of international education.

The value of education is regarded very highly in Asia and so you will find students are keen to learn and there is little or no issues of behaviour.  Whether it’s Korea, Japan, China, Malaysia or Thailand, the demand for native speakers of English is high.  Teachers want to work in this region also benefit from being able to get a quick flight to a neighbouring country to explore the rich cultures it has to offer.

In addition to fully qualified teachers, there is also a great demand for teachers that hold a degree and a Teaching as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification with a few years experience.  SeekTeachers™ highly recommends teachers to consider Asia as a hot spot, not just now but in the future as well.  It important to note that TEFL teachers are not likely to be paid the same as fully qualified teachers and packages are not as attractive, however if your after a cultural experience you really will have a great time teaching here.

Salary packages often include housing, flights and a two year package. Tax ranges from 2-7%

Type of School

Schools here are normally financed by private owners or corporations, and similar to the Middle East, they can vary a lot. There are quite a few IB curriculum schools so if you’re considering working in this region, it is valuable if you either have experience of delivering the IB curriculum or intend to learn it.

Curricula

Many of in the international schools adopt some or all of the following curricula: IB Diploma, MYP (not so common), PYP, IGCSE, National Curriculum of England & Wales, IPC EYFS, Local curriculum.

Requirements

As educational standards are on the rise so are the calibre of teachers Asia is looking for. Unless it is a TEFL based role it's becoming a standard to have the following:
  • A Bachelors Degree with a Teaching Qualification or
  • A Bachelors Degree with a TEFL.
  • 2 years experience for teaching staff.
  • 3 years experience for managers and member of the senior management team.
  • As more schools are running the IB Curriculum having IB experience is an advantage.

For Universities:

  • PhD.
  • 2/3 years experience.

Remuneration Package

Due to the demand for western trained teachers to be so high, the salary packages you will find are quite rewarding and will include a salary, airfare, housing or a housing allowance.  In most cases schools pay in local currency and the length of a contract is normally two years.

Important Information

Teachers applying to this region will have slightly more flexibility if they only have a Bachelor’s degree, a TEFL qualification.  If you are in this position SeekTeachers™ does tend get some TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) positions.  Places like Taiwan, some areas of Korea, China and Shanghai would have positions suitable for you.   In addition you should have experience of delivering the TEFL. TEFL teacher may not also get flights and housing or may be required to pay for aspects and get reimbursed at the end of the contract.

TEFL positions in a primary or secondary international school will require a bachelor’s degree with a primary or secondary teaching qualification in addition to having TEFL.  Again experience is recommended.

English teaching jobs in Korea should also pay for half of the money put into the mandatory national pension fund, though at present only American and Canadian citizens are eligible for pension fund reimbursement

Finding work in the Asia can be a daunting experience with so many varieties.  Be sure to discuss any concerns you have with your SeekTeachers™ consultant to put your mind at ease.
