Does your child struggle in throwing a ball, writing, or tying their shoes?

Visual motor skills are fundamental to a child’s development. Children need adequate visual perceptual abilities to function efficiently in school and at home. When these skills are jeopardized, a child might have problems doing the basics such as doing sports, tracing lines, coloring pictures/shapes, writing as well, and can even occur in their personal activities such as tying shoelaces or buttoning their shirt. Visual motor skills consist of the ability to observe, acknowledge, and utilise visual information about forms, shapes, figures, and objects.

Signs for visual motor skill difficulties include:

●Struggling to copy lines, numbers, and letters

●Struggling with buttoning and tying laces

● Difficulty catching and/or kicking a ball

● Struggling to copy patterns

● Poor line awareness in handwriting

● Difficulty pouring a liquid from one container to another

● Difficulty stacking blocks

● Struggling with puzzles

● Difficulty keeping place when reading and writing

If your child is experiencing any of these difficulties, then it’s best to consider therapy and consult a professional that can help your child overcome these difficulties in life as in the future it can affect their personal lives as well. This is necessary for their growth and development to achieve well academically and personally. Listen to your child’s needs, they need someone to engage with them and help them find themselves!
